The new LEE100 hood by LEE Filters review

23rd February 2020

Recently I received the new LEE100 hood for testing and review purposes, at first glance I thought wow this is huge! But during the past few weeks, I embarked on a new project and I am currently shooting with the sun already high up in the sky and sometimes light coming at angles to my camera setup, I soon fell in love with this great piece of equipment.

Setup: Nikon D800 + Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8, LEE100 holder with 0.9 Soft Grad, 15 stop IRND & LEE100 Hood.

In the past, I used to carry either a small umbrella, which took the space of a bottle of water in my backpack’s side pockets or I had to shade the gap between the lens and the LEE100 holder with my hand, which was very uncomfortable especially when I had to hold still for the entire duration of the exposure.

The new LEE100 Hood is a self-supporting lens hood for the LEE100 holder system, it shades the lens from flare, glare and direct or at an angle sun-ray. It connects directly to the holder by means of four levers which can be adjusted according to the thickness of the holder depending on how many slots it is assembled with.

It is easily mounted by holding the holder flat on the palm of the hand to align the four blue connectors and the hood is firmly attached. The blue tab when in the lock position, prevents the hood from swiveling.

The material is very sturdy and well built, with a bellow type concertina, and can be held at different positions and angles.

With the bellow at full extension and with two filter slots assembled on my holder, I was able to shoot at 28mm on full-frame without any vignette.

I found this hood also useful during one rainy day, since the material is water-resistant it prevented my filters and front lens element to get wet, I could continue shooting without having to pack up and leave.

The hood collapses to a thickness of 4 cm, which in my opinion is an ideal size to fit my backpack’s laptop compartment. It comes in a padded clamshell case, but the hood’s material is strong enough to be carried around without its ‘proper’ case.

Once again, LEE Filters have managed to exceed my expectations with another innovative piece of equipment that works perfectly with the new LEE100 holder.
